LX Pantos to Build “Ocean Forest” for Marine Restoration

- Creating an Ocean Forest via multilateral MOU with local governments and public organizations

- Transplanting eelgrass and cleaning coasts through employee volunteer work

- Targeting large-scale ocean forest in the waters off Uihang-ri, Taean by 2028

LX Pantos (CEO: Lee Yong-ho) has launched a marine ecosystem restoration initiative by committing to create an “Ocean Forest” as part of its broader climate action efforts.

On May 16, LX Pantos signed a five-party memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chungcheongnam-do Province, Taean County, ChildFund Korea, and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency at the Gaemok Port Fishermen’s Welfare Center in Taean.

The agreement aims to promote cooperation on the Ocean Forest Project. Under the MOU, LX Pantos will transplant over 10,000 eelgrass seedlings annually (through 2028) in the waters off Uihang-ri, Taean County, to form an underwater forest. Chungcheongnam-do and Taean County will provide administrative support, while ChildFund Korea and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency will contribute their respective expertise to the overall project operations and maintenance.

Referring to a thriving marine area where seaweed and seagrasses like eelgrass form dense underwater meadows, ocean forests are considered vital to marine biodiversity and climate resilience because they are known to be particularly effective at absorbing CO2. In fact, they are estimated to remove approximately 337 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per square kilometer annually and are recognized as a key contributor to expanding blue carbon, that is, the carbon captured and stored by marine ecosystems.

*Eelgrass: A perennial seagrass recognized internationally as a source of blue carbon, eelgrass provides critical spawning grounds and habitats for marine life.

Following the MOU signing ceremony, more than 30 LX Pantos employees participated in a volunteer activity to support the Ocean Forest Project. The team created and transplanted 1,000 shoots of eelgrass using clay ceramics and traditional Korean paper (hanji), while also carrying out a coastal cleanup by removing marine debris in the surrounding area.

Commenting on the initiative, An LX Pantos official stated, “We are proud to contribute to the restoration of the world’s oceans, which lie at the heart of the global logistics business. LX Pantos remains committed to fulfilling its social responsibility and preserving sustainable marine ecosystems.”
